Pre-paid
wireless phone cards have certain popularity. You
buy a certain cell phone set, and then you just buy the cards
when you need to talk in the amount of minutes when need. You
dont need a credit card, a social security card. It has a certain
attraction for those who want to be anonymous or have temporary
relationships.
It also has an obvious usefulness for the criminal
element. When you stop buying minutes, thats when the service
terminates. You can lower your communication costs somewhat by
using text messaging, which cost substantially lower than charge
per minute per call. Cell phones are used on the go sometimes,
if they have the Internet capacity, as a substitute for a computer,
which can be super convenient, especially if you dont want to
lug your laptop computer around. It may be easier to get regular
cell phone coverage, then looking for a Wi-Fi connection somewhere
across the United States or around the world.
Of course your pay-as-you-go cell phone only works
with its brand of wireless phone cards. So you cant mix Cingular
phone cards with Verizon, etc. Minutes do not last forever; you
have to buy new minutes every month or six weeks or whatever.
If you buy new minutes, often your old minutes will roll over
into the new time slot. Some wireless phone card providers will
add airtime to your plan at set intervals for a monthly fee.
Its interesting to compare wireless phone card
rates with regular cell phone plan rates. For T-Mobile easy speak,
you pay $50 for 400 minutes. Not bad, but with a regular cell
phone plan; you can sometimes get 1000 minutes for the same price.
Other plans let you talk for free to other subscribers to the
cell phone plan.
To call from the United States to another country
is sometimes quite cheap, other times much more expensive. So
a call to Italy or Israel may be 3 cents a minute on some plans,
but a call to Guatemala or to Bolivia, or Nigeria may be 12 cents
are more a minute. This may change with increase use of VoIP
(Voice over Internet Protocol) and become more level. Another
important variability is what is the connection fee? If you are
making many short calls, this will make your calling much more
expensive, but if you are making calls 15 minutes or more this
is not really a problem.
